The Magpie

2nd Aug 2022

When you hear the word "magpie",you think of a medium-sized black and white bird with long tail feathers.

There is another "magpie",however. The Magpie is quite a commonly seen moth with white, black and orange-yellow markings. It can be found in hedgerows, moors and gardens. It has a wingspan of 35-40mm and rests with its wings spread out flat. Its larvae(caterpillars)feed on shrubs including hawthorn, currant bushes and heather.

The one in the picture was taken on the bathroom wall last week.

There is another similar species, the Small Magpie, which is also quite common but much smaller in size.
